Insulation

A range of options exist, depending on the space involved. Thermal Barriers only works on existing residential properties - which means we are specialists and use products that are designed for home use.

Insulation is rated acoording to its "r" value or "resistance" value - resistance to heat flow. A higher r-value means higher resistance to heat flow. The cost of insulation will increase based on the higher r-value, but you will also save on reduced ongoing energy costs.

Windows

Replacing windows is a quick and efficient way to increase your home's value while also improving sound proofing and reducing air leaks. In many older New England homes, sash windows leave pockets of air trapped that greatly reduce heating and cooling efficiency.

Energy efficient windows are rated acoording to their "r" value or "resistance" value - resistance to heat flow. A higher r-value means higher resistance to heat flow. The cost of the window will increase based on the higher r-value, but you will also save on lost energy costs, with the less that goes out the window - literally.

Windows are priced by size and options selected. Typically, windows will range from $250 to $400 each.

Venting

Why heat unused or unusable space? Winter in Connecticut has shown that ice dams can cause serious damage to roofs and interior spaces. These require costly repairs. Yet they are simple and relatively cheap to avoid.

Ice dams happen when:

  • snow is collected on a roof
  • the roof is heated from the underside (example, a warm attic)
  • the melted snow drains underneath the rest of the snow down the slope of the roof
  • as it travels and reaches the roof eaves (where there is no warming underneath) or poor insulation areas (such as wire and plumbing penetrations), the water refreezes
  • where there is poor insulation, this not yet frozen water can find paths inside your home

Wet insulation doesn't work well and can become moldy. Roofs are damaged. Walls get damaged, requiring new sheet rock and painting. Framing can become damaged, as well.

By installing soffit venting and gable venting, the interior air is brought to a consistent temperature with the exterior air. This prevents the melting of snow gathered on a roof. (We'll check on the insulation around the wire and plumbing penetrations, et al too.)

Problem averted. No snow rake required.

Most venting solutions are free of charge when completed with the home insulation project. Venting quoted separately typically costs between $75 and $150 per vent installed.
